8 Wing Trenton, also known as Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton, was established in 1931 as a key air transport hub for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Its original mission focused on supporting air operations and training, quickly making it a central node in Canada's military aviation network.
The base's strategic location near Lake Ontario enabled rapid deployment and logistical support across the country and abroad. This positioning has contributed to its long-standing importance in Canadian defense operations.
During World War II, CFB Trenton expanded rapidly. It became a major training center under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, hosting thousands of aircrew from across the Commonwealth.
The base added new runways, hangars, and support facilities to accommodate its growing role. After the war, Trenton remained vital, serving as a key transport and search-and-rescue hub throughout the Cold War.
Significant units stationed at 8 Wing Trenton have included air mobility squadrons, search and rescue teams, and air maintenance groups. The base has long operated the RCAF's heavy transport aircraft, including the CC-130 Hercules and CC-177 Globemaster III.
These aircraft support both domestic and international missions, enabling the base to fulfill a wide range of operational requirements for the Canadian Armed Forces.
Today, 8 Wing Trenton is the RCAF's primary air mobility base. It supports humanitarian relief, disaster response, and military deployments worldwide.
Locally, the base is a major employer and community partner in the Quinte region. It has retained its official name, "8 Wing Trenton," since the introduction of the "Wing" structure in the 1990s, evolving from its earlier designation as RCAF Station Trenton and later CFB Trenton.
