Al Dhafra Air Base was established in the early 1980s by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as part of a broader effort to modernize its military infrastructure. The base's original mission focused on supporting UAE Air Force operations and providing a strategic hub for regional defense.
Its location, just south of Abu Dhabi, offered a secure and accessible site for both national and coalition activities. This positioning made it a key asset for military planning and operations in the region.
During the 1990s and early 2000s, Al Dhafra expanded significantly. The United States Air Force (USAF) began operating from the base in the early 1990s, using it as a key logistics and operational center during Operations Desert Storm and Southern Watch.
Upgrades at Al Dhafra included new runways, hardened aircraft shelters, and advanced command facilities. These improvements supported a growing multinational presence and enhanced the base’s operational capabilities.
Throughout the Global War on Terror, Al Dhafra played a critical role. The base hosted USAF units such as the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing, which provided intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and aerial refueling capabilities.
The base also supported coalition partners, making it a central node for air operations over Iraq, Afghanistan, and the broader Middle East. Its strategic importance grew as regional conflicts intensified.
Today, Al Dhafra Air Base remains a vital asset for both the UAE and allied forces. It supports ongoing counterterrorism operations, regional deterrence, and rapid response missions.
The base has not undergone any significant official name changes since its establishment, retaining its original designation. It continues to foster close military cooperation between the UAE and its partners, enhancing regional security and stability.

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) to Al Dhafra Air Base starts with receiving official orders. Once you have your orders, immediately contact your local Transportation Office to discuss your moving options. Most service members choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as a DITY move, where you handle the move yourself and may receive reimbursement. Using the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) is essential for scheduling, tracking, and managing your move online. DPS helps you upload documents, request shipment dates, and communicate with your moving company. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) help cover temporary housing costs while you secure permanent accommodations, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps offset relocation expenses. Make sure to keep all receipts and records for reimbursement. Al Dhafra Air Base has unique in-processing requirements, so check with your sponsor or the base newcomer’s guide for the latest arrival procedures. Early planning and frequent communication with your sponsor and the Transportation Office can help ensure a smooth transition.
