Base History & Name
U.S. Soldiers assigned to Regional Command-East of the NATO-led Kosovo Force mission, also known as KFOR, and the Camp Bondsteel Fire Department host a training event for Kosovo Search and Rescue Association members at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo, April 26-27, 2025. The event focused on emergency...
Camp Bondsteel was established in 1999 as the main base for U.S. forces supporting NATO's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. Its original mission focused on providing security and stability to the region after the Kosovo War.
The base was rapidly constructed to support Operation Joint Guardian, the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) operation. Camp Bondsteel quickly became the largest U.S. military installation in the Balkans.
Construction and expansion occurred in phases, with initial facilities built to house thousands of troops and support staff. Over time, the base added infrastructure such as medical clinics, logistics hubs, and aviation support.
Camp Bondsteel has hosted a range of units, including elements of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division, National Guard brigades, and multinational NATO partners.
During the early 2000s, Camp Bondsteel played a crucial role in stabilizing Kosovo and supporting humanitarian operations. The base served as a command center for peacekeeping, civil affairs, and reconstruction efforts.
Its presence helped deter violence and fostered cooperation among local communities and international organizations.
Today, Camp Bondsteel remains a key hub for U.S. and NATO operations in the Balkans. It continues to support peacekeeping, training, and partnership missions, reinforcing regional security.
The installation has not undergone any significant official name changes since its establishment.
Namesake
Staff Sergeant Bondsteel led his platoon under heavy enemy fire, rescuing wounded soldiers and neutralizing enemy positions despite being wounded himself. His leadership and valor exemplified the highest traditions of military service, making him a fitting namesake for the installation.

PCS & Relocation Essentials
Because peak permanent change of station moving season is upon us, it is advisable if you already have your PCS orders to schedule you household packing and shipment with transportation and personal property, said Connie Silk, Army Community Service. Currently on Fort Campbell there could be a four- to six-week delay to get an appointment. (U.S. Army)
Arriving at Camp Bondsteel begins with receiving official orders. Once you have orders in hand, contact your current installation’s Transportation Office to schedule your move and discuss your options. Most service members choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where movers pack and ship your belongings, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as a DITY move, where you handle the move yourself and may receive reimbursement. The Defense Personal Property System (DPS) is your online portal for managing all move details, from scheduling to tracking shipments. Log in early to start your move process and upload required documents. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) help cover hotel costs while you secure housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) offsets out-of-pocket moving expenses. Know your allowances before you move to avoid surprises. Camp Bondsteel has unique arrival procedures, so review the base’s newcomer guide and reach out to your sponsor for local tips. Early coordination ensures a smoother transition and helps you access all available support.
