Camp Ederle sits in Vicenza, Italy, and began as a strategic U.S. Army installation after World War II. Its original mission supported American and NATO operations in Europe, reflecting the shifting security landscape of the early Cold War.
The base was established on the site of a former Italian military facility, and its presence signaled a long-term U.S. commitment to European defense.
Major construction and expansion took place in the 1950s and 1960s as the base adapted to new operational needs. Facilities grew to accommodate more U.S. personnel and their families.
Over the decades, Camp Ederle became the headquarters for the Southern European Task Force (SETAF), a key U.S. Army command in the region.
Throughout the Cold War, Camp Ederle played a vital role in NATO's southern flank. It hosted units such as the 173rd Airborne Brigade and supported rapid deployment forces.
The base also served as a logistics and training hub for operations in the Balkans during the 1990s.
Today, Camp Ederle remains a critical part of U.S. Army Garrison Italy. It continues to support U.S. and allied operations, providing command, control, and support functions.
The base also fosters strong ties with the local Italian community, contributing to regional security and cooperation.
Name Changes: Camp Ederle has retained its name since its establishment by the U.S. Army. It was named after Major Carlo Ederle, an Italian World War I hero, reflecting the partnership between the United States and Italy.
Namesake
The U.S. Army named the installation in his honor to recognize his sacrifice and to symbolize the enduring partnership between the United States and Italy. His legacy continues to inspire both American and Italian service members stationed at the base.

When you receive PCS orders to Camp Ederle, start by reading your orders carefully and contacting the base Transportation Office. Early action helps you secure preferred move dates and reduces stress. The two main move options are Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, and Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move and may receive reimbursement. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule, track, and manage your move. DPS is your central hub for uploading documents, viewing entitlements, and communicating with your transportation office. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) help cover hotel costs while you wait for housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps offset relocation expenses. Know your entitlements and keep receipts for all covered expenses. Camp Ederle’s location near key transportation routes makes arrival and in-processing smooth, but check base-specific requirements and arrival procedures ahead of time.
