Base History & Name

Camp Humphreys began as a small airfield called Pyeongtaek Airfield, built by the Imperial Japanese Army in the early 20th century. After World War II, the United States Army took control and used it as a key logistics and aviation hub during the Korean War.
The base was officially renamed Camp Humphreys in 1962, honoring a U.S. Army pilot who died in a 1944 crash. This change marked a new chapter in the base’s history and its role in U.S. military operations in Korea.
Major expansions took place in the 1970s and 1980s as the U.S. consolidated its presence in South Korea. The base grew to support aviation, engineering, and support units, reflecting its strategic importance along the Korean Peninsula.
Transformation accelerated in the 2000s when the U.S. and South Korea agreed to relocate most American forces from Seoul and other installations to Camp Humphreys. This move, part of the Yongsan Relocation Plan, led to massive construction projects and made Camp Humphreys the largest U.S. overseas military base by land area.
Today, Camp Humphreys serves as the headquarters for United States Forces Korea (USFK), Eighth Army, and other major commands. Its modern facilities support tens of thousands of U.S. personnel, families, and contractors.
The base plays a vital role in regional security, U.S.-ROK alliance operations, and local economic development. Its continued growth underscores its importance to both the U.S. military and the surrounding community.
No significant official name changes have occurred since the 1962 renaming to Camp Humphreys.
