Camp Schwab is a major United States Marine Corps installation in northern Okinawa, Japan. The base supports U.S. military operations in the region.

The base was established in 1959 to strengthen the American presence after World War II and during the early Cold War. Its location was chosen for strategic access to the Asia-Pacific.

Camp Schwab’s original mission included training and housing Marine units. These units focused on regional security and rapid response throughout the Asia-Pacific area.

Namesake

Camp Schwab is named after Private First Class Albert E. Schwab, a U.S. Marine who received the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. On May 7, 1945, PFC Schwab single-handedly destroyed multiple Japanese machine gun positions, enabling his unit to advance and saving many lives. He was killed in action that same day. His bravery and sacrifice are commemorated through the naming of the base.

Arriving at Camp Schwab starts with receiving your official PCS orders. Next, contact your local Transportation Office to schedule your move and review entitlements. Most service members choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), which provides reimbursement if you move yourself. Both options require you to use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil for tracking and documentation.

PCS entitlements help offset moving costs. You may qualify for Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to cover short-term stays and a Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to help with extra expenses. Be sure to keep receipts and follow claim procedures closely. Camp Schwab's remote location makes early planning essential—coordinate with your sponsor and check base-specific arrival instructions.

Use DPS to manage your shipment and keep in touch with your Transportation Office. Early action ensures smoother delivery and helps avoid delays, especially during peak moving season. Always confirm your weight allowance and double-check requirements for bringing pets or special items.
