Military Base History

CFB Bagotville was established in 1942 during World War II to provide air defense for the vital Alcan facilities in the Saguenay region. The base’s original mission focused on protecting key industrial assets and training fighter pilots for the Royal Canadian Air Force.
In the early 1950s, major expansion transformed the base as the Cold War intensified. New runways, hangars, and support buildings were constructed to accommodate jet fighters and larger operational units.
Bagotville hosted several prominent squadrons over the decades, including the 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron and 433 Tactical Fighter Squadron. Both squadrons flew various generations of fighter aircraft, reflecting the base’s evolving operational role.
During the Cold War, Bagotville played a critical role in North American air defense as part of NORAD. Its squadrons maintained high readiness to intercept potential threats, and the base frequently hosted joint exercises with U.S. and allied forces.
Today, CFB Bagotville remains a key RCAF installation. The base supports NORAD operations, provides search and rescue coverage, and serves as a vital employer in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.
The base has retained its original name since establishment, with no significant official name changes.

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) to CFB Bagotville starts when you receive official orders. Next, contact your base Transportation Office to coordinate your move and schedule your shipment. You can choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where movers pack and transport your belongings, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move yourself for possible reimbursement. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to manage your move, track shipments, and upload required documents. DPS is your central hub for PCS paperwork and scheduling. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) helps cover lodging while you wait for housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps offset relocation costs. Check your eligibility and rates before moving. CFB Bagotville is a Canadian Forces Base, so U.S. personnel should coordinate closely with both U.S. and Canadian offices for base access and housing. Early planning ensures a smooth arrival, especially if you have special circumstances like pets or dependents.
