Military Base History

CFB Greenwood began as RAF Station Greenwood in 1942, built during World War II to train aircrews under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The base’s original mission focused on training bomber crews, vital to the Allied war effort.
Its location in Nova Scotia provided strategic access to the Atlantic and relative safety from enemy attack.
Postwar expansion led to the base’s transition to Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) control in 1944, when it was renamed RCAF Station Greenwood. During the Cold War, the base’s mission shifted to anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrol, reflecting new security priorities.
Major construction projects in the 1950s and 1960s modernized runways and facilities to accommodate larger aircraft.
Significant units stationed at Greenwood have included No. 405 Squadron, which played a key role in anti-submarine operations, and No. 413 Squadron, which focused on search and rescue.
The base became a hub for maritime patrol with the arrival of the CP-140 Aurora aircraft in the 1980s.
In 1968, after the unification of Canada’s armed forces, the base was renamed Canadian Forces Base Greenwood (CFB Greenwood), reflecting its new tri-service identity.
Today, CFB Greenwood remains the largest air base in Atlantic Canada, supporting search and rescue, maritime patrol, and community engagement.
It continues to play a crucial role in both national defense and local economic life.

Arriving at CFB Greenwood starts with receiving your official PCS orders. Next, contact the Base Transportation Office to discuss your move options and begin planning. Most service members use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule and track their shipment. You can choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you move your own items for possible reimbursement. Each option has different paperwork and procedures, so review your choices carefully. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) help cover costs during your transition. TLE reimburses you for lodging and meals while you search for housing, while DLA helps with relocation expenses. Make sure you keep receipts and understand your authorized allowances. Using DPS is essential for tracking your move and communicating with transportation offices. If you have questions, reach out to the Base Transportation Office for guidance. CFB Greenwood may have unique check-in procedures or local resources—ask your sponsor or unit for specific details.
