Military Base History

CFB North Bay was established in 1951 as a key node in North America's air defense network. Its original mission focused on detecting and intercepting potential Soviet bomber threats during the early Cold War.
The base's location in Ontario provided strategic coverage for the Great Lakes and northeastern approaches to Canada and the United States. This positioning made it a crucial part of continental defense planning.
Construction of the base included extensive radar and command facilities. In 1963, the iconic underground Complex was completed, designed to withstand nuclear attack and ensure command continuity.
Over the decades, CFB North Bay hosted several key units, including the 414 Electronic Warfare Squadron and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Canadian Sector. These units enhanced the base’s operational capabilities.
During the Cold War, CFB North Bay played a vital role in continental air defense. Its operations center coordinated radar data and fighter intercepts, making it a linchpin in the NORAD system.
The base adapted to changing threats, transitioning from bomber defense to missile warning and aerospace control. This flexibility ensured its continued relevance in North American security.
Today, CFB North Bay remains a central hub for NORAD operations in Canada. The base supports aerospace warning and control missions, and its personnel contribute to both national defense and the local economy.
The installation has retained its original name since establishment, with no significant official name changes. This continuity reflects its enduring role in Canadian defense.

Arriving at CFB North Bay involves several key steps. Start by reviewing your PCS orders and contacting the base Transportation Office to discuss your move options. You can choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the military arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move and may receive reimbursement. Each move type has specific requirements and benefits, so discuss your situation with your transportation counselor. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to manage your move, track shipments, and schedule pickups. This online system is essential for submitting move requests and checking shipment status. You’ll also want to review your entitlements, such as Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) for hotel stays during your transition, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to help offset moving costs. These benefits can ease your financial burden during the PCS process. CFB North Bay is a CONUS installation, so standard U.S. military PCS policies apply. However, always check with the base for any unique local requirements or support programs. Early communication and planning help ensure a smooth arrival.
