Military Base History

Incirlik Air Base began as a joint U.S.-Turkish project in the early 1950s, during the height of the Cold War. Its original mission was to serve as a strategic air hub for NATO and U.S. Air Forces, focusing on reconnaissance and deterrence against Soviet expansion.
The base's construction reflected the urgency of the era, with rapid development to support both Turkish and American operations. Strategic cooperation was essential to meet the security needs of the region.
Major expansions took place throughout the 1950s and 1960s, as Incirlik became a key site for U.S. tactical and strategic aircraft. The base hosted important units such as the 39th Air Base Wing and supported rotational deployments of bombers and fighters.
Upgrades to runways and facilities enabled Incirlik to handle a wide range of aircraft, including nuclear-capable bombers. These improvements increased the base’s operational flexibility and importance.
During the Cold War, Incirlik played a central role in intelligence-gathering missions and served as a forward base for U.S. operations in the Middle East. The base was a launching point for U-2 reconnaissance flights and later supported operations during the Gulf War, Operation Northern Watch, and the Global War on Terror.
Its strategic location allowed rapid response to crises in Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, making it a critical asset for U.S. and NATO missions.
Today, Incirlik AB remains a vital NATO installation, supporting U.S. and allied air operations, humanitarian missions, and regional security initiatives. The base has not undergone significant official name changes since its establishment.
It retains the name “Incirlik Air Base” to reflect its geographic location near the town of Incirlik, Turkey, maintaining its historical and strategic identity.

Arriving at Incirlik AB starts with receiving official orders. Once you have orders, promptly contact your local Transportation Office to discuss your move options. Most service members choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment—where the government arranges movers—or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also called a DITY move, where you handle the move and may receive reimbursement. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule and track your shipment. DPS is your main hub for managing paperwork, scheduling pickups, and getting updates throughout your PCS journey.
You are eligible for key entitlements during your move. The Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) covers part of your hotel and meal costs while you search for housing—up to 10 days for most CONUS moves. The Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps offset miscellaneous moving expenses. Check current rates and eligibility on the Per Diem, Travel, and Transportation Allowance Committee (PDTATAC) website. For Incirlik AB, coordinate closely with the base’s Transportation Office for local guidance, as the base has unique procedures for processing inbound HHG and unaccompanied baggage due to its location and security protocols.
