Joint Force Command (JFC) Brunssum began as a key NATO headquarters during the early Cold War. Its original mission was to coordinate the defense of Northern Europe, especially the Low Countries and Germany, against potential Warsaw Pact aggression.
The site was chosen for its strategic location in the Netherlands, near the borders of Germany and Belgium. This placement allowed NATO to respond quickly to threats in Central Europe.
Construction started in the early 1950s as NATO established its command structure. The base first operated as Headquarters, Allied Forces Central Europe (AFCENT), opening in 1953.
Over the decades, the installation expanded to accommodate new technologies, communications, and multinational staff. AFCENT played a central role in NATO's deterrence posture throughout the Cold War.
Significant units and commands have rotated through Brunssum. In 2004, the base was officially renamed Joint Force Command Brunssum, reflecting NATO's shift to more flexible, deployable command structures.
The command has since directed major NATO operations, including the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. This marked a new era of multinational cooperation and rapid deployment.
Today, JFC Brunssum remains a vital NATO headquarters. It oversees operational planning, readiness, and multinational exercises.
The base is a hub for cooperation between U.S. Army units, allied forces, and local Dutch partners, supporting both regional security and global missions.

When you receive PCS orders to JFC Brunssum, start by reviewing your orders and contacting the base Transportation Office. You’ll need to register your move in the Defense Personal Property System (DPS). The DPS lets you schedule your move, track your shipment, and manage documents all in one place. Choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where movers pack and ship your items, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), where you move your own belongings and may get reimbursed. Both options have specific steps and paperwork, so review your entitlements carefully.
You may qualify for key allowances, including Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA). TLE helps cover hotel costs while you wait for housing, and DLA helps offset relocation expenses. Be sure to keep all receipts and submit claims on time. For JFC Brunssum, you’ll also need to check any base-specific requirements or support resources available for incoming families. Visit official military relocation sites for the latest updates and guidance.
