Military Base History

Lajes Field sits on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal, and was built in 1943 during World War II. The base’s main mission was to act as a refueling and staging point for Allied aircraft crossing the Atlantic.

Its strategic mid-Atlantic location made it essential for ferrying aircraft, moving troops, and supporting anti-submarine operations against German U-boats. These roles helped the Allies maintain control over vital transatlantic routes.

During the Cold War, Lajes Field became a key NATO asset. The United States Air Force expanded the base, adding new runways, hangars, and support facilities to support growing military needs.

The base hosted rotational bomber and tanker units, as well as reconnaissance aircraft. Its importance increased as it provided a critical link for airlift and refueling missions between the U.S., Europe, and Africa.

Lajes Field played a significant role in several major conflicts, including the Berlin Airlift, the Gulf War, and operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Its facilities enabled rapid deployment and logistical support for U.S. and allied forces.

The base’s logistical capabilities made it a linchpin for air mobility, supporting both deployment and sustainment operations during times of crisis.

Today, Lajes Field continues to support U.S. and NATO operations, though its mission now focuses more on en route support and contingency operations. The base also plays a key role in local employment and U.S.-Portuguese relations.

Lajes Field has retained its original name since its establishment, with no significant official name changes recorded throughout its history.

Lajes Field, located in the Azores, Portugal, is an OCONUS assignment with unique relocation requirements. Start your PCS by reviewing your orders and contacting your losing base’s Transportation Office. Early coordination helps secure your preferred moving dates and ensures you meet Lajes Field’s specific documentation and shipping rules. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to set up your Household Goods (HHG) shipment or Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY). HHG is the most common move type, but some members prefer PPM for more control and potential reimbursement. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) offset costs for temporary housing and relocation. Lajes Field’s OCONUS status allows up to 60 days of TLE.
