Landstuhl Regional Medical Center receives certification as an Überregionales TraumaZentrum, or supra-regional trauma center, by the German Trauma Society (DGU) during an award ceremony April 24, 2025, in Landstuhl, Germany. The certification recognizes LRMC's continued excellence in trauma...
Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) opened in 1953 to serve as a key medical facility for U.S. forces in Europe. Its original mission focused on providing comprehensive healthcare to American military personnel, their families, and NATO allies stationed in the region.
The hospital’s location in Germany made it a strategic medical hub during the Cold War. LRMC supported U.S. Army Europe and other allied commands, ensuring rapid medical response for military operations.
Construction and expansion of LRMC happened in several phases. The initial facility replaced smaller, scattered medical units in postwar Germany, centralizing care for military communities.
Over the decades, LRMC increased its capacity and added new capabilities. The hospital built new wards, surgical suites, and specialized treatment centers, becoming the largest American military hospital outside the United States.
LRMC played a vital role during major conflicts such as the Vietnam War, Gulf War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. It served as the primary evacuation and treatment center for wounded U.S. and allied personnel.
Thousands of casualties were airlifted from combat zones to LRMC for care. The hospital’s staff included Army, Air Force, and Navy medical units, reflecting its joint-service mission and broad expertise.
Today, LRMC remains the central medical facility for U.S. forces in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. It provides advanced trauma care, specialty services, and supports humanitarian missions.
The hospital is a key partner in the local German community, fostering medical cooperation and training. LRMC has retained its original name, with no significant official name changes since its establishment.

PCS & Relocation Essentials

Arriving at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) starts with receiving official orders. Next, contact your losing installation’s Transportation Office to schedule your move and discuss your options. Most service members choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government contracts movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as a DITY move, where you handle the move yourself and may be reimbursed. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule and track your shipment.
Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) help offset relocation costs. TLE covers temporary lodging for up to 10 days while you secure permanent housing. DLA helps with miscellaneous moving expenses. Review your eligibility and rates on the DoD Per Diem website.
LRMC is a major medical hub in Germany, so OCONUS procedures apply. Start early, gather documents, and coordinate with your sponsor. Base-specific guidance and local contacts can smooth your transition. Check local arrival guides and reach out to the Transportation Office for tailored support.
