Malmstrom Air Force Base began as Great Falls Army Air Base in 1942 to support World War II operations. The base trained B-17 and B-24 bomber crews and served as a key transit point for aircraft heading to the Soviet Union through the Lend-Lease program. Its Montana location provided strategic advantages for training and logistics.
During the Cold War, the base expanded significantly and was renamed Malmstrom Air Force Base in 1954 to honor Col. Einar Axel Malmstrom. The arrival of the 341st Strategic Missile Wing in 1961 marked a pivotal shift, as Malmstrom became one of the first U.S. bases to deploy Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). This change established the base as a cornerstone of America’s nuclear deterrence.
Throughout the decades, Malmstrom hosted several important units, including bomber and fighter squadrons during WWII and missile wings during the Cold War. Its missile fields remain among the largest in the nation. The base played a critical role during tense periods, such as the Cuban Missile Crisis, by maintaining constant operational readiness.
Today, Malmstrom AFB remains a vital part of U.S. strategic defense. It is home to the 341st Missile Wing, which operates and maintains Minuteman III ICBMs. The base also supports local communities and provides economic stability in the region. Its mission continues to focus on nuclear deterrence, rapid response, and national security.
Namesake
After the war, Col. Malmstrom continued his service in various command roles. He tragically died in a plane crash near Great Falls, Montana, in 1954. The base was renamed in his honor to recognize his dedication and contributions to the Air Force.
