MCAS Iwakuni began as a Japanese naval air station in 1940, supporting Imperial Japanese Navy operations. Its original mission focused on training and launching air units during World War II.

After the war, Allied forces took control of the base and shifted its mission to support occupation and regional security. This transition marked the beginning of its long-term strategic importance in the region.

During the Korean War, the base became a key logistics and staging point for United Nations forces. The U.S. Air Force initially operated the installation, but in 1952, the U.S. Marine Corps assumed control and renamed it Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni.

Over the decades, the base expanded its runways, hangars, and support facilities to accommodate new aircraft and missions. These upgrades allowed MCAS Iwakuni to adapt to evolving military needs.

Throughout the Cold War, MCAS Iwakuni hosted a rotating presence of Marine and Navy aviation units. The base played a vital role in regional deterrence and rapid response, supporting operations in Vietnam and the Persian Gulf.

It also served as a hub for humanitarian missions across the Asia-Pacific, demonstrating its versatility beyond combat operations.

Today, MCAS Iwakuni is a modern, joint-use airfield supporting U.S. Marine Corps, Navy, and Japanese Self-Defense Forces. It remains a strategic asset for U.S. Indo-Pacific operations and strengthens the U.S.-Japan alliance.

The base has not undergone major official name changes since becoming MCAS Iwakuni in 1952, maintaining its identity and mission focus for over seventy years.
