Misawa Air Base began as an Imperial Japanese Navy airfield in 1938, serving as a training and operational base during World War II. After Japan's surrender in 1945, U.S. forces took control and repurposed the site as a key air base for occupation and regional security.
The base was officially designated Misawa Air Base in 1948, coming under U.S. Air Force control. This marked a shift to American-led operations in northern Japan and established the base’s enduring strategic role.
During the Korean War and the Cold War, Misawa Air Base expanded rapidly. The U.S. Air Force upgraded runways and facilities to support jet aircraft and reconnaissance missions.
Several significant units were hosted at Misawa, including the 49th Fighter-Bomber Wing and the 6920th Security Wing. These units reflected the base’s strategic importance in monitoring Soviet activity and supporting U.S. interests in Northeast Asia.
Throughout the late 20th century, Misawa continued to modernize and became a hub for joint U.S.-Japan operations. Both nations’ forces shared facilities, strengthening military cooperation.
The 35th Fighter Wing, equipped with F-16 Fighting Falcons, became the primary U.S. unit stationed at Misawa. This unit focused on air defense, training, and regional stability in Northeast Asia.
Today, Misawa Air Base remains a vital installation for the U.S.-Japan alliance. It supports air operations, intelligence gathering, and humanitarian missions across the Pacific.
The base also plays a significant role in the local community, providing employment and fostering cultural exchange. Misawa Air Base has retained its name since coming under U.S. control, with no major official name changes documented.

When you receive PCS orders to Misawa Air Base, your first step is to review your orders and contact your local Transportation Office. They will guide you on setting up your move in the Defense Personal Property System (DPS), the DoD’s official platform for managing household goods shipments and Personally Procured Moves (PPM/DITY). Early coordination helps you secure preferred move dates and avoid delays. Most service members use the Household Goods (HHG) shipment, but PPM/DITY moves are also an option if you prefer to move yourself. Each method has pros and cons, so discuss with your counselor which fits your needs.
You are entitled to several PCS allowances, including Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA). TLE helps cover the cost of lodging and meals while you wait for housing, up to the authorized limit. DLA offsets miscellaneous moving costs. Use official calculators and the PDTATAC site to estimate your entitlements. Keep all receipts and documents for reimbursement.
The DPS system is essential for tracking your shipment, managing claims, and communicating with your movers. Log in early to set up your profile and upload orders. If you need help, your local Transportation Office or the DPS help desk can assist. Misawa AB’s remote location and weather can affect move timelines, so plan ahead and stay in contact with your move coordinator. For more details, visit official DoD and base relocation sites.
