Muwaffaq Salti Air Base (MSAB) is a critical U.S. Air Force installation in Jordan. Built in the 1980s by the Royal Jordanian Air Force, the base aimed to strengthen Jordan’s air defense and regional security.

Its strategic location near Azraq allows for rapid response to regional threats. The base’s position makes it a valuable asset for both Jordanian and U.S. military operations.

MSAB underwent significant expansion in the early 2000s as the U.S. military increased its presence in the Middle East. The base became a forward operating location for coalition air operations, especially during Operation Inherent Resolve and the fight against ISIS.

U.S. Air Force units, including fighter and support squadrons, have rotated through MSAB. These units provide air superiority, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance in support of coalition missions.

During major conflicts in the region, MSAB served as a launch point for airstrikes and humanitarian missions. The base’s facilities were upgraded to support advanced aircraft and joint operations with Jordanian forces.

MSAB also played a role in regional training exercises and security cooperation. These activities have strengthened partnerships and improved operational readiness.

Today, MSAB remains vital for U.S. and coalition operations. The base supports ongoing counterterrorism missions and helps reinforce U.S.-Jordanian defense ties.

The base has not undergone any significant official name changes and is commonly referred to as Muwaffaq Salti Air Base or MSAB.

Namesake

Muwaffaq Salti was a pilot in the Royal Jordanian Air Force. He is remembered as a national hero in Jordan for his service and sacrifice. Salti died in combat during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, and the base was named in his honor to commemorate his bravery and dedication to his country.
