Naval Air Facility (NAF) Atsugi began as an Imperial Japanese Navy airfield in 1938 to support Japan’s expanding military aviation. After World War II, U.S. forces took control and transformed the site into a key base for American naval aviation in the Pacific.

The base’s original mission focused on supporting carrier-based aircraft and providing logistics for regional operations. This strategic role established Atsugi as a vital hub for U.S. military presence in East Asia.

During the Korean War and Cold War, NAF Atsugi expanded rapidly as the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps stationed significant aviation units here. Fighter and reconnaissance squadrons operated from the base, enhancing American air power in the region.

The base played a critical role in regional security, serving as a launch point for missions across East Asia. Its location and capabilities made it essential for U.S. operations during periods of heightened tension.

Throughout the Vietnam War and into the late 20th century, Atsugi remained a hub for U.S. naval aviation. Carrier Air Wing Five (CVW-5) operated from Atsugi, supporting the forward-deployed aircraft carrier in Yokosuka.

Infrastructure upgrades in the 1960s and 1980s modernized runways, hangars, and support facilities. These improvements ensured the base could handle advanced aircraft and increased operational demands.

Today, NAF Atsugi supports U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force operations. The base underpins the U.S.-Japan alliance by providing logistics, maintenance, and training for regional stability.

Atsugi has retained its original name since U.S. control, with no major official name changes. This continuity reflects its enduring role in supporting allied operations in the Pacific.
