Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella was established in 1959 to support U.S. and NATO operations in the Mediterranean. Its original mission focused on providing a strategic airfield and logistics hub for U.S. Navy patrol aircraft, especially during the Cold War.
The base’s location near Catania, Sicily, offered a vital link between Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. This strategic position enabled rapid response and support for military operations across multiple regions.
Key construction phases occurred throughout the 1960s and 1970s, expanding runways, hangars, and support facilities. The base grew to accommodate a range of aircraft, including P-3 Orion maritime patrol planes and, later, unmanned aerial systems.
Over time, NAS Sigonella became a critical logistics and refueling point for U.S. and NATO forces. It supported operations from the Balkans to the Middle East, enhancing the reach and effectiveness of allied missions.
Significant units stationed at NAS Sigonella have included Patrol Squadron detachments, the U.S. Sixth Fleet, and various NATO elements. The base played a key role in operations such as Desert Storm, Allied Force, and the Global War on Terrorism.
NAS Sigonella served as a launch point for surveillance, reconnaissance, and humanitarian missions. Its capabilities allowed for rapid deployment and support during critical international events.
Today, NAS Sigonella remains a cornerstone of U.S. and allied presence in the Mediterranean. It supports a wide range of missions, from anti-submarine warfare to humanitarian relief, and hosts both U.S. and Italian military personnel.
The installation has retained its original name since establishment, with no significant official name changes. Its ongoing mission continues to strengthen regional security and cooperation.

Arriving at NAS Sigonella involves several key steps. First, review your official orders and connect with your local Transportation Office to start your move. You’ll choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you manage the move and may be reimbursed. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule and track your shipment.
You’ll qualify for entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA). TLE helps cover lodging and meals while you wait for housing. DLA helps offset moving costs. Check current rates and eligibility before you move. NAS Sigonella is an OCONUS location, so expect different rules for entitlements and timelines. Work with your sponsor for local info and connect with the base’s Relocation Assistance Program for support.
Plan ahead for customs and overseas shipping restrictions. Some items may not be allowed or require extra documentation. Reach out to the NAS Sigonella Transportation Office for guidance on Italian import rules, pet travel, and vehicle shipment specifics.
