Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples began operations in the early 1950s, as the U.S. Navy sought a strategic presence in the Mediterranean after World War II. Its original mission was to provide logistical and administrative support to U.S. naval forces and NATO allies in the region.
The base quickly became a critical hub for communications, supply, and coordination during the early years of the Cold War. NSA Naples played a central role in supporting U.S. and allied operations throughout the Mediterranean.
NSA Naples expanded significantly during the 1960s and 1970s, with new facilities built in Capodichino and Gricignano di Aversa. These expansions supported a growing number of U.S. personnel and strengthened the base’s command capabilities.
Over the decades, NSA Naples has hosted a variety of major units, including the Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa, and the Allied Joint Force Command Naples. The base’s role as a command center for the U.S. Sixth Fleet has been especially important.
During major conflicts such as the Cold War, NSA Naples played a vital role in surveillance, intelligence, and rapid deployment operations. The base provided logistical support during crises in the Middle East and the Balkans.
NSA Naples has also served as a launch point for humanitarian and peacekeeping missions, helping to coordinate relief efforts and support stability in the region.
Today, NSA Naples remains a key operational and administrative center for U.S. and NATO forces in Europe. The base supports fleet operations, intelligence activities, and joint exercises with allied nations.
NSA Naples continues to act as a vital link between the U.S. military and the local Italian community. The installation has not undergone any significant official name changes since its establishment as NSA Naples.

NSA Naples is an OCONUS (outside the continental U.S.) installation. After receiving PCS orders, immediately contact the base Transportation Office to start your move. You’ll choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY). Most families use HHG for overseas moves, but PPM can offer flexibility if you want to manage your own shipment. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to set up your move, track shipments, and manage documents. DPS is your main hub for scheduling, claims, and updates. You are entitled to Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) for up to 10 days when departing CONUS, but for OCONUS arrivals like Naples, you may qualify for Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) for up to 60 days upon arrival. Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps offset relocation costs. Check current rates and eligibility before you move. Reach out to the NSA Naples Fleet and Family Support Center for local support and resources.
