Military Base History

Osan Air Base began as a strategic airfield built by the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Its original mission was to provide a forward operating location for air support and defense of South Korea.
The base was constructed in 1952, when UN forces needed a reliable airstrip close to the front lines. Rapid construction allowed Osan to become operational quickly, supporting both combat and reconnaissance missions in the region.
Throughout the Cold War, Osan Air Base expanded its facilities and runways to accommodate advanced aircraft and increased personnel. The base became home to the 51st Fighter Wing, which remains its primary unit.
Over the decades, Osan hosted a variety of fighter, reconnaissance, and support squadrons. This reflected its evolving mission in regional security and its growing importance to U.S. and allied operations.
Osan played a critical role during tense periods on the Korean Peninsula, including the 1968 Pueblo Incident and frequent North Korean provocations. The base served as a key deterrent and rapid response hub for U.S. and allied air operations.
Its infrastructure was regularly upgraded to support modern aircraft and joint exercises with the Republic of Korea Air Force. Continuous improvements ensured Osan remained ready for any contingency.
Today, Osan Air Base is a cornerstone of U.S. military presence in Northeast Asia. It supports air defense, intelligence, and humanitarian missions, while also serving as a vital link between U.S. and South Korean forces.
The base has retained its original name since establishment, with no significant official name changes recorded throughout its history.

Arriving at Osan Air Base involves several key steps to ensure a smooth transition. Once you receive your PCS orders, immediately contact your local Transportation Office to start your move planning. You’ll choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move and may be reimbursed. Both options require you to use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil for scheduling and tracking your shipment. Register in DPS early to avoid delays. As you plan, review your entitlements. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) helps cover lodging costs while you secure permanent housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) assists with relocation expenses. Make sure to check current rates and eligibility before your move. Osan Air Base has unique check-in procedures and support services for newcomers. Contact your sponsor and review the base arrival guide for details on local requirements, in-processing, and available family support programs.
