Panzer Kaserne sits in Böblingen near Stuttgart, Germany, and was built in the late 1930s by the German Wehrmacht. Its original purpose was to serve as a training and staging area for armored (Panzer) units, reflecting Germany’s military buildup before World War II.

The base featured extensive motor pools, barracks, and training facilities designed for armored warfare. These facilities supported the Wehrmacht’s focus on mechanized military operations.

After World War II, the U.S. Army took control of Panzer Kaserne. The installation became a key site for American forces during the occupation and the early years of the Cold War.

The base hosted various U.S. Army units, including elements of the 1st Infantry Division and later, support and logistics units critical to NATO operations in Europe.

During the Cold War, Panzer Kaserne’s role expanded as the U.S. increased its presence in West Germany. The installation supported rapid deployment and readiness missions, acting as a logistics and command hub for U.S. Army Europe.

Over time, the base saw upgrades to its infrastructure, including new housing, schools, and support facilities for American personnel and their families.

Today, Panzer Kaserne remains an active U.S. Army installation. It houses the headquarters of U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart and supports joint U.S. and NATO operations.

The base is home to several key units, including Special Operations Command Europe (SOCEUR) and Marine Forces Europe and Africa. Panzer Kaserne continues to play a vital role in transatlantic security and the local German-American community.

The installation has retained its original name, "Panzer Kaserne," since its construction. There have been no significant official name changes since its establishment.

PCS & Relocation Essentials

Because peak permanent change of station moving season is upon us, it is advisable if you already have your PCS orders to schedule you household packing and shipment with transportation and personal property, said Connie Silk, Army Community Service. Currently on Fort Campbell there could be a four- to six-week delay to get an appointment. (U.S. Army)

When you receive PCS orders to Panzer Kaserne, start by reviewing your orders and contacting the base Transportation Office. This office helps you schedule your Household Goods (HHG) shipment or Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY). The Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil is your main tool for managing your move, tracking shipments, and submitting required paperwork. Set up your DPS account early to avoid delays.

Key entitlements include Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE), which helps cover hotel costs while you search for housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA), which offsets some of the costs of relocating. You must keep receipts for all travel and lodging expenses to file for reimbursement. Panzer Kaserne is a busy installation, so book your transportation dates as soon as possible, especially during summer peak season.

Panzer Kaserne is located near Stuttgart, and traffic can be heavy in the area. Plan your travel times carefully and communicate with your sponsor for local tips. If you have pets or special items, notify your transportation office early for guidance on local regulations and quarantine requirements.
