Military Base History
U.S. Air Force Honor Guard members participate in a remembrance ceremony at Lavenham, England, May 19, 2019. Members of Royal Air Force Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall joined World War II veterans and community members to commemorate heroic acts of the men of the RAF and U.S. Army Air Force who...
RAF Lakenheath began as a Royal Air Force station in 1941, built to support British bomber operations during World War II. Its original mission was to serve as a satellite airfield for RAF Mildenhall, providing dispersal and operational flexibility for heavy bombers.
The base played a supporting role in the Allied air campaign. Both British and American aircraft operated from Lakenheath as the war progressed, increasing its strategic importance.
Postwar expansion transformed Lakenheath into a key site for the United States Air Force. In 1948, the USAF began using the base under NATO, and it soon became home to the 48th Fighter-Bomber Wing.
Throughout the Cold War, Lakenheath was a front-line NATO installation. The base hosted nuclear-capable aircraft and played a central role in the deterrence strategy against the Soviet Union.
The base underwent significant upgrades during the 1950s and 1960s, including runway extensions and new facilities to support advanced jet fighters. Over the decades, it has hosted a variety of aircraft, from the F-100 Super Sabre to the F-111 Aardvark, and currently the F-15E Strike Eagle.
Lakenheath has been involved in major operations, including the Gulf War, Kosovo, and ongoing missions in the Middle East. Its operational history reflects its enduring strategic value.
Today, RAF Lakenheath remains the largest USAF-operated base in the United Kingdom. It is the only base in Europe hosting the F-15E and, as of the early 2020s, the F-35A Lightning II.
The base continues to serve as a critical hub for NATO air power, supporting both U.S. and allied operations. RAF Lakenheath has retained its original name since its establishment, reflecting its geographic location rather than a personal namesake.

PCS & Relocation Essentials
Senior Airman Brandie Benoit, with the 72nd Logistics Readiness Squadron, watches as a moving truck is re-weighed at a local weigh station. Inspectors with the Personal Property and Passenger Movement Section have saved over $800,000 by having moving companies re-weigh their vehicles and cargo and comparing it to the initial recorded weight. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to schedule and track your shipment. DPS is the DoD's official portal for managing military moves. You'll also want to review your entitlements, including Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA). TLE helps offset lodging costs during your transition, while DLA covers some out-of-pocket relocation expenses. Be sure to keep receipts and documentation for reimbursement.
RAF Lakenheath is an OCONUS (Outside Continental United States) assignment, so you’ll need to follow additional customs and clearance steps. Plan for longer shipping times and check local pet import rules. Your sponsor and the base newcomer’s guide can help you prepare for arrival and in-processing.
