RAF Mildenhall was established in 1930 as a Royal Air Force bomber base to strengthen the United Kingdom’s air defense. Its initial mission supported RAF Bomber Command, making it a hub for long-range bomber operations.
The airfield’s strategic location in Suffolk made it a key asset for both training and operational sorties during the pre-World War II buildup. This positioning allowed the base to play a crucial role in preparing for conflict.
During World War II, RAF Mildenhall played a vital role in the Allied air campaign. The base hosted several RAF squadrons flying Wellington and Stirling bombers, launching missions over occupied Europe.
The airfield underwent significant expansion during this period, with new runways, hangars, and support facilities built to meet increased operational demands. These upgrades enabled the base to handle more aircraft and personnel.
Post-war, the base transitioned to a peacetime role but remained active in the early Cold War years. In 1950, the United States Air Force (USAF) began operations at Mildenhall, marking a new era for the installation.
The base became a critical hub for USAF refueling, reconnaissance, and special operations missions, supporting NATO and U.S. interests across Europe and beyond. Key units included the 100th Air Refueling Wing and the 352d Special Operations Wing.
Today, RAF Mildenhall continues to serve as a vital USAF installation, supporting air refueling, intelligence, and special operations missions. It remains a cornerstone of U.S. and NATO operations in Europe.
The base has retained its original name since establishment, with no significant official name changes. It also fosters strong ties with the local community, maintaining its historic legacy.
