Military Base History
Military members and civilians from multiple countries view a C-47 Douglas Sky Train at Cherbourg-Marpertus Airport in Cherbourg-Octeville, France, June 6, 2019, as part of the 75th-anniversary observance of D-Day. The C-47 was one of the primary aircraft used for air assault on D-Day on June 6,...
Ramstein Air Base was established in the early 1950s as a key part of the United States' post-World War II presence in Europe. Its original mission focused on serving as a major hub for U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE), supporting NATO operations and providing a strategic airlift and command center during the Cold War.
The base was created by merging two separate airfields—Landstuhl and Ramstein—into one large installation, which was completed in 1953. This consolidation enabled greater operational efficiency and allowed the U.S. military to centralize its European air operations.
Throughout the Cold War, Ramstein played a critical role as the headquarters for USAFE and as a forward operating base for both tactical and strategic air missions. The base expanded significantly in the 1970s and 1980s, with upgrades to runways, command facilities, and housing to meet growing personnel and mission needs.
Key units stationed at Ramstein have included the 86th Airlift Wing and the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing. These units have supported a wide range of missions, from airlift operations to ground support and rapid deployment.
Ramstein has been pivotal in major military operations, including Operation Desert Storm, the Balkans conflicts, and post-9/11 missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. The base has also served as a vital medical evacuation and logistics center, supporting both U.S. and allied forces.
In addition to combat operations, Ramstein provides essential humanitarian support and coordinates logistics for disaster relief and non-combatant evacuation missions across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Today, Ramstein remains the largest U.S. Air Force base in Europe and a central hub for transatlantic air operations, humanitarian missions, and NATO coordination. The base continues to support a large American and international community, acting as a bridge between the U.S. military and its European allies.
The installation has retained the name "Ramstein Air Base" since its establishment, with no significant official name changes throughout its history.

When you receive PCS orders to Ramstein Air Base, start by reviewing your orders and contacting your current base’s Transportation Office. You’ll need to set up your move in the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil. This system manages your shipment of household goods (HHG) and allows you to track your move status. Choose between a government-managed HHG shipment or a Personally Procured Move (PPM, formerly DITY). Each move type has unique benefits, so compare options in DPS before deciding. Ramstein is a major gateway for U.S. personnel in Europe, so expect detailed customs and shipping steps. Plan ahead for longer transit times and required documentation. You may qualify for Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) reimbursement, which helps cover costs while waiting for housing. Dislocation Allowance (DLA) can offset moving expenses. Check current rates and eligibility before you go. Make sure to keep key documents and orders handy for in-processing at Ramstein. Use your sponsor for local guidance and to smooth your arrival.
