Military Base History
LANDSTUHL, Germany – U.S. Army Dental Health Activity Rheinland-Pfalz (DENTAC-RP) held a change of command ceremony April 11 at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Fitness Center. The host for the ceremony was U.S. Army Col. (Dr.) Scott Rankin (center), commander of Dental Health Command,...
Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) was established in 1951 as the central command of NATO's Allied Command Operations. Its original mission was to coordinate the defense of Western Europe during the early Cold War, uniting U.S., British, and other NATO forces under a single operational headquarters.
The base was initially located in Rocquencourt, near Paris, France. In 1966, France's withdrawal from NATO's integrated military command prompted SHAPE to relocate to its current site in Casteau, near Mons, Belgium, in 1967.
This move marked a major expansion, with new facilities built to support SHAPE’s multinational staff and mission. The relocation allowed for improved coordination and operational effectiveness among NATO allies.
Over the decades, SHAPE has hosted key NATO units and personnel from all member nations. It played a vital role in Cold War deterrence, overseeing exercises and readiness against potential Soviet aggression.
In the post-Cold War era, SHAPE has directed NATO operations in the Balkans, Afghanistan, and other crisis regions. The command has continually adapted to new security challenges as the global landscape evolved.
Today, SHAPE remains the operational heart of NATO, coordinating multinational defense, crisis response, and partnership missions. The installation has always been known as SHAPE, reflecting its unique multinational command structure rather than a traditional U.S. Army base naming convention.

When you receive PCS orders to SHAPE, start by contacting the base Transportation Office. They will guide you through arranging your move, whether you choose a Household Goods (HHG) shipment or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY). Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule, track, and manage your shipment. Early action helps you secure your preferred move dates and reduces stress.
SHAPE supports both HHG and PPM options. HHG allows the government to handle your shipment, while PPM gives you control and possible reimbursement if you move your items yourself. Review your weight allowance and keep receipts for all expenses. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) helps offset hotel costs while you secure housing, and the Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps with extra moving costs. Check the current rates and entitlements before you move.
SHAPE has unique check-in procedures, so review the base’s arrival guide and reach out to your sponsor for local tips. Make sure to keep all important documents with you during travel, including orders, IDs, and receipts.
