Military Base History

USAG Wiesbaden began as a German military airfield called Fliegerhorst Wiesbaden, built in 1929. The base’s original mission was to support the German Luftwaffe, but it quickly gained strategic importance as tensions in Europe increased.
During World War II, the airfield served as a key operational hub for German forces. The site expanded significantly to accommodate increased air activity, making it a central point for military operations.
After WWII, U.S. forces took control of the installation in 1945 and renamed it Wiesbaden Army Airfield. The base became a major logistics and command center for U.S. Army Europe during the early Cold War.
For several decades, the installation hosted the headquarters of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) until 1973. That year, the air mission shifted to Ramstein Air Base, but Wiesbaden’s importance remained.
Throughout the Cold War, Wiesbaden was a vital U.S. Army garrison, supporting intelligence, communications, and logistics units. The installation underwent multiple construction phases to modernize its facilities for evolving operational needs.
In 2012, the garrison was officially renamed U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden (USAG Wiesbaden). This change reflected its broader role as a community hub for American personnel in the region.
Today, USAG Wiesbaden serves as the headquarters for U.S. Army Europe and Africa. The installation supports thousands of soldiers, civilians, and family members by providing essential services and resources.
USAG Wiesbaden acts as a key platform for U.S. operations and partnerships in Europe. The installation continues to play a central role in NATO missions and U.S. strategic interests across the continent.
