Military Base History

Volkel Air Base originated as a Luftwaffe airfield during World War II, built by German forces between 1940 and 1942. Its main function was to support German air operations in Western Europe, especially against Allied bombers.
The base included hardened aircraft shelters and long runways, which highlighted its strategic value to the Axis war effort. These features made it a key military asset during the conflict.
After liberation in 1944, the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) assumed control of the site. Volkel Air Base quickly became a key NATO installation during the Cold War, reflecting its ongoing military importance.
The 1950s and 1960s saw significant expansion and modernization at Volkel, including new hangars, runways, and support facilities. USAF units began rotational deployments as part of NATO's nuclear sharing arrangements, further increasing the base's profile.
During the Cold War, Volkel hosted several RNLAF squadrons, such as those flying F-104 Starfighters and later F-16 Fighting Falcons. The base also reportedly stores US nuclear weapons under NATO arrangements, though specific details remain classified.
Today, Volkel Air Base serves as a vital hub for the RNLAF, housing the 312 and 313 Squadrons. These units are transitioning to F-35s while continuing to operate F-16s.
The base supports NATO operations, joint exercises, and regional security. Volkel Air Base has retained its name since its postwar transfer to Dutch control, with no significant official name changes recorded.
