Yokota Air Base began as Tama Airfield, built by the Imperial Japanese Army in 1940. Its original mission was to serve as a key military airfield for Japan during World War II.
After the war, U.S. forces took control, transforming the site into a major hub for American air operations in the Pacific. Post-WWII expansion brought rapid development, with the U.S. Air Force rebuilding and expanding runways, hangars, and support facilities.
By the early 1950s, Yokota became headquarters for Fifth Air Force, cementing its role as a command and logistics center in the region.
During the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Yokota AB served as a critical staging and transport base. The base supported airlift, reconnaissance, and command missions, hosting units like the 374th Airlift Wing and 610th Air Control Flight.
Yokota also played a vital role in Cold War deterrence, with advanced radar and communications systems enhancing its strategic importance.
Today, Yokota AB remains the primary airlift hub for U.S. Forces Japan and the Pacific Air Forces. It supports regional security, disaster relief, and joint U.S.-Japan operations.
The base is a key link in the U.S.-Japan alliance and an important part of the local community, hosting annual friendship festivals and outreach events.
Name changes: The installation was originally known as Tama Airfield (1940–1945) before being renamed Yokota Air Base after U.S. occupation in 1945. No further official name changes are recorded.
