Military Base History

Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) was established in 1917 as the U.S. Army’s primary site for testing ordnance and munitions. The Army chose Harford County, Maryland, for its proximity to rail lines, deep-water ports, and open land—features that made it ideal for weapons testing and development.
APG quickly became a center for innovation, supporting the war effort in World War I by evaluating artillery, small arms, and other military equipment. Its early contributions helped shape the Army’s capabilities during a critical period.
During World War II, APG underwent major expansion to meet the demands of a global conflict. Thousands of workers and soldiers arrived, and the base added new laboratories, ranges, and support facilities.
The installation played a critical role in developing and testing tanks, vehicles, and chemical defense equipment. Throughout the Cold War, APG hosted key research and development units like the U.S. Army Research Laboratory and the Edgewood Chemical Biological Center.
APG has never undergone a significant official name change since its founding. The installation has always been known as Aberdeen Proving Ground, reflecting its original mission as a proving ground for Army ordnance.
Today, APG is a hub for Army research, development, testing, and evaluation (RDT&E). It supports more than 90 tenant organizations, including the Army Test and Evaluation Command and the Communications-Electronics Command.
The base is a major employer in the region and continues to drive innovation in defense technology, cybersecurity, and chemical-biological defense. Its mission has evolved, but APG remains a cornerstone of Army readiness and modernization.

When you receive PCS orders to Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), start by reading your orders carefully and contacting the base Transportation Office. Choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also called a DITY move, where you handle the move and may be reimbursed. Each move type has different paperwork and timelines, so decide early. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule, track, and manage your move; this is required for most shipments.
You are entitled to Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) for up to 10 days in CONUS locations, which helps cover hotel and meal costs while you secure permanent housing. You may also qualify for a Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to offset relocation costs. Check the latest rates and rules on official sites before you move. APG has a robust sponsorship program, so request a sponsor to help with local guidance and in-processing details.
Aberdeen Proving Ground has unique gate hours and housing options, so review base-specific guides before arrival. The area is close to Baltimore and Philadelphia, which may impact travel planning and temporary lodging availability.
