Altus Air Force Base began operations in 1943 as a training center for heavy bomber crews during World War II. Its original mission focused on preparing aircrews for overseas combat, primarily using the B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator.

After the war, the base closed briefly, reflecting the postwar drawdown. Altus AFB reopened in 1953 as the Cold War intensified, adapting to new military demands.

During the Cold War, Altus AFB expanded to support Strategic Air Command operations. The base hosted B-47 Stratojets and KC-97 Stratofreighters, playing a key role in nuclear deterrence and air refueling.

Major construction during this era included new runways, hangars, and support facilities. These upgrades accommodated jet aircraft and increased personnel, enhancing the base's operational capacity.

In the 1960s, Altus AFB shifted to airlift and mobility training, becoming the primary training site for C-141 Starlifter and C-5 Galaxy crews. The arrival of the C-17 Globemaster III in the 1990s reinforced this mission.

The 97th Air Mobility Wing, the base's main unit, now trains aircrews for the C-17, KC-135 Stratotanker, and KC-46 Pegasus. This training supports global Air Force operations and ensures readiness for a variety of missions.

Today, Altus AFB is a cornerstone of Air Force mobility training. It supports global operations by preparing aircrews for rapid deployment, humanitarian missions, and aerial refueling.

The base remains vital to both the local Oklahoma economy and the broader U.S. Air Force mission. Altus AFB has retained its original name since establishment, with no significant official name changes.

Start your PCS to Altus AFB by reviewing your official orders and contacting the Base Transportation Office as soon as possible. Early coordination helps secure your preferred moving dates and ensures you understand your entitlements. Most service members choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, managed by the government, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as a DITY move, where you manage the move and may receive reimbursement. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to schedule, track, and manage your move. DPS is your central hub for uploading documents, communicating with movers, and checking shipment status. You are entitled to Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) for up to 10 days when moving within the continental U.S., which helps cover hotel costs while you secure housing. You may also qualify for a Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to offset miscellaneous moving expenses. Altus AFB offers newcomer support and can answer local questions about schools, housing, and in-processing. Contact your sponsor or the Military & Family Readiness Center for local insights and support. Check the base website for arrival guides and contact lists.

Housing Options

Altus AFB offers a mix of on-base privatized housing and off-base community rentals. Most military families choose between living in base neighborhoods, managed by Balfour Beatty Communities, or renting in Altus or nearby towns. On-base options include single-family homes and duplexes, with waitlists possible during peak PCS seasons. The local rental market is affordable, but selection can be limited due to the small-town setting. Service members stationed at Altus AFB receive Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), which helps offset rental or mortgage costs. For 2025, an E-5 with dependents receives about $1,227 monthly. Use our BAH Calculator to estimate your specific rate. Cost of living in Altus is lower than national averages, so BAH often covers most or all rental expenses. However, newer or updated homes may rent quickly, so plan ahead for PCS moves.
