Barksdale Air Force Base was established in the early 1930s as a major airfield for the U.S. Army Air Corps. Its original mission focused on training and supporting bomber units, reflecting the growing importance of air power between the World Wars.
The base was named in honor of Lieutenant Eugene Hoy Barksdale, a pioneer military aviator who died in 1926. Construction began in 1931, and the base officially opened in 1933 with early facilities such as runways, hangars, and housing for personnel.
Over the years, Barksdale underwent several expansions, especially during World War II. The base became a key training and operational hub for bomber crews during this period.
During World War II, Barksdale played a vital role in training B-17 and B-24 bomber crews. The base also supported anti-submarine patrols and hosted several operational units.
After the war, Barksdale transitioned to the newly formed U.S. Air Force in 1947. The base became home to Strategic Air Command (SAC) units, including the 2nd Bomb Wing, which remains stationed there today.
Throughout the Cold War, Barksdale served as a major base for America's nuclear deterrent. It hosted B-52 Stratofortress bombers and KC-135 Stratotankers, providing both strike and refueling capabilities.
The base played a critical role during crises such as the Cuban Missile Crisis. Barksdale continued to modernize its infrastructure and mission throughout the Cold War era.
Today, Barksdale AFB is the headquarters of Air Force Global Strike Command. It continues to support B-52 operations and serves as a key center for strategic deterrence.
- The base is a major employer in the Shreveport-Bossier City area.
- Barksdale remains central to U.S. Air Force global operations.
No significant official name changes have occurred since its establishment. The base has always been known as Barksdale Field or Barksdale Air Force Base.
