Beale Air Force Base began as Camp Beale in 1942, built to train infantry and armored units during World War II. Its original mission focused on preparing troops for overseas combat and serving as a prisoner-of-war camp.
The base covered over 86,000 acres, making it one of the largest military training sites in California during the war.
After WWII, the installation transitioned to an Air Force base in 1948, reflecting the growing importance of air power in the early Cold War. The base was renamed Beale Air Force Base in 1948, honoring its new role.
Major construction in the 1950s and 1960s supported the arrival of bomber and reconnaissance units, including the 4126th Strategic Wing and later the 456th Strategic Aerospace Wing.
Beale AFB became a key site for strategic reconnaissance with the arrival of the U-2 Dragon Lady and SR-71 Blackbird in the 1960s. These aircraft played vital roles in intelligence gathering during the Cold War.
The base also hosted Titan I intercontinental ballistic missiles from 1961 to 1965, underscoring its strategic significance for national security and global surveillance missions.
Today, Beale AFB is home to the 9th Reconnaissance Wing, operating advanced reconnaissance aircraft such as the U-2 and RQ-4 Global Hawk. The base supports global intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
It remains a critical hub for Air Force operations, contributing to both national defense and the local economy. No significant name changes have occurred since its designation as Beale Air Force Base in 1948.
Namesake
Beale's contributions included military service during the Mexican-American War and leadership as Superintendent of Indian Affairs in California and Nevada. His legacy as a pioneer and public servant is honored by the naming of the base.

Arriving at Beale AFB starts with receiving your official orders. Next, contact the base Transportation Office to schedule your move and discuss your options. Most service members choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government manages the move, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move and may receive reimbursement. Each method has unique paperwork and deadlines—ask questions early if unsure. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to manage your move. This system tracks your shipments, schedules pickups, and lets you submit claims if needed. Be sure to update your contact info in DPS so you don’t miss important updates. You may be eligible for Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to help cover hotel costs while house-hunting, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to offset moving expenses. For most CONUS moves like Beale, TLE covers up to 10 days. Save all receipts and check current rates before you travel. Review your entitlements and ask the Transportation Office for specifics about Beale AFB’s local processes. Some steps, like in-processing and base access, may have unique requirements. Check the base website and your sponsor for local tips.
