Base History & Name

Camp Pendleton was established in 1942 as a major training base for the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Its original mission focused on preparing Marines for amphibious warfare, which was a key strategy in the Pacific Theater. The base’s Southern California coastal location offered ideal terrain for large-scale exercises and rapid deployment.

Construction began rapidly in early 1942, transforming over 125,000 acres of ranch land into a sprawling military installation. The base was officially dedicated later that year and quickly became the primary training center for West Coast Marines. During World War II, tens of thousands of Marines trained at Camp Pendleton before deploying overseas.

After WWII, Camp Pendleton remained a vital Marine Corps facility, adapting to the needs of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. The base expanded its infrastructure to support new training requirements and hosted major units, including the 1st Marine Division and I Marine Expeditionary Force. During the Cold War, Camp Pendleton served as a key mobilization and deployment hub.

Today, Camp Pendleton is one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the world. It supports training for ground, air, and amphibious operations and serves as the home of the 1st Marine Division. The base also plays a significant role in disaster response and community partnerships in Southern California, retaining its original name to honor its historical legacy.

Namesake

Camp Pendleton is named in honor of Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton, a distinguished Marine Corps officer. Born in 1860, Pendleton served with distinction in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, and World War I.

General Pendleton was a strong advocate for a permanent Marine base on the West Coast. His vision and leadership were instrumental in establishing a major Marine presence in California, making him a fitting namesake for the installation. He retired in 1924 and is remembered for his dedication to the Corps and its future.

Housing Options

Camp Pendleton offers a range of housing options for active duty personnel and their families. On-base housing is privatized and managed by Lincoln Military Housing, with neighborhoods designed for different ranks and family sizes. Off-base, many service members turn to community rentals in nearby cities due to demand and waitlists. The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) at Camp Pendleton is among the highest in the country to offset Southern California’s high cost of living. For 2025, an E-5 with dependents receives around $3,921 per month. You can estimate your specific BAH using our BAH Calculator. Off-base rents often exceed BAH, so budgeting and early planning are key. Expect strong competition for both on- and off-base homes, with waitlists common for popular neighborhoods during PCS season.
