Camp Shelby began as a National Guard mobilization site in 1917, responding to the urgent need for training grounds during World War I. Its original mission was to prepare soldiers for overseas deployment, using its vast acreage and proximity to rail lines.
The base quickly became a cornerstone for mobilizing and training troops from Mississippi and neighboring states. Its strategic location and resources made it essential for supporting the war effort.
During World War II, Camp Shelby underwent major expansion to accommodate the massive influx of draftees and volunteers. The installation trained entire divisions, including the famed 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a Japanese-American unit.
The base also hosted German prisoners of war and served as a separation center for returning veterans. Camp Shelby has retained its original name since its establishment, with no significant official changes.
Throughout the Cold War and into the 21st century, Camp Shelby adapted to new missions. It became a key site for Reserve and National Guard training, supporting units deploying to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
The base’s facilities expanded to include advanced simulation centers and ranges for modern combat scenarios. These upgrades ensured Camp Shelby remained relevant for evolving military needs.
Today, Camp Shelby is the largest state-owned military training site in the U.S. It supports joint training for Army, Air Force, and Marine units, as well as foreign allies.
The base is vital to Mississippi’s economy and serves as a hub for disaster response and community engagement. Camp Shelby maintains its legacy as a premier training center for the nation.

PCS & Relocation Essentials
Because peak permanent change of station moving season is upon us, it is advisable if you already have your PCS orders to schedule you household packing and shipment with transportation and personal property, said Connie Silk, Army Community Service. Currently on Fort Campbell there could be a four- to six-week delay to get an appointment. (U.S. Army)
Arriving at Camp Shelby starts with receiving your official PCS orders. Next, contact the base Transportation Office to discuss your move options. You can choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where movers pack and transport your belongings, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move and may get reimbursed. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at Move.mil to set up and track your move. This system is key for scheduling, documentation, and communication with movers.
You are eligible for several entitlements during your PCS. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) covers part of your hotel costs while you search for housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps offset moving expenses. Check current rates before your move. Camp Shelby has unique in-processing requirements, so review the base arrival guide and contact your sponsor for local tips. Early planning helps you avoid delays, especially during peak summer months.
