Military Base History
A Falcon 9 rocket launches the NROL-69 mission from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, March 24, 2025. During the past two years, the National Reconnaissance Office has launched more than 150 satellites, creating the largest and most capable government...
Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (SFS) began as a missile testing and launch site in the late 1940s. Its original mission supported the U.S. military’s missile programs as Cold War tensions increased. The site’s coastal location made it ideal for launching rockets over the Atlantic Ocean, which minimized risk to populated areas.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Cape Canaveral expanded rapidly to meet the nation’s growing space ambitions. The base played a central role in launching early ballistic missiles, satellites, and crewed missions. It supported NASA’s Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, making it a focal point for the U.S. space race.
The installation hosted various Air Force and later Space Force units dedicated to launch operations and range safety. These units ensured that launches were conducted safely and efficiently, supporting both military and civilian missions.
The installation underwent several name changes as its mission evolved. It started as the Joint Long Range Proving Ground in 1949, became Cape Canaveral Missile Test Annex, and was renamed Cape Kennedy Air Force Station in 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy.
In 1973, the name reverted to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to reflect local and historical ties. In December 2020, after the U.S. Space Force was established, it was redesignated as Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
Today, Cape Canaveral SFS is a critical hub for U.S. space operations. It supports Department of Defense, NASA, and commercial launches, making it vital to national security and the local economy.
The base continues to adapt by hosting new Space Force units and supporting cutting-edge space and missile technology. Its ongoing evolution ensures it remains at the forefront of space exploration and defense.
