Carlisle Barracks stands as one of the oldest military installations in the United States, with roots reaching back to the mid-18th century. Established in 1757 as a supply depot during the French and Indian War, it served as a key logistics hub for British and colonial forces.

The strategic location in Pennsylvania made Carlisle Barracks a vital point for westward expansion and military campaigns throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Its position influenced the movement of troops and supplies during critical periods in American history.

During the 19th century, the installation underwent several repurposings. Most notably, it became home to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School from 1879 to 1918, a significant but controversial institution in U.S. history.

After the school's closure, the Army reestablished Carlisle Barracks as a military post. The site supported various training and administrative functions, adapting to the evolving needs of the military.

World War I and II brought new missions to the installation. Carlisle Barracks hosted the Medical Field Service School, which trained Army medical personnel for combat and field operations.

This medical training role continued through the interwar years and into World War II, making the barracks a central hub for Army medical education and innovation.

Since 1951, Carlisle Barracks has been the home of the U.S. Army War College. The college prepares senior military officers and civilians for strategic leadership roles in the modern era.

Today, the installation focuses on advanced military education and strategic studies, supporting both the Army and the local community. The name "Carlisle Barracks" has remained consistent, reflecting its enduring military heritage.

Arriving at Carlisle Barracks starts with receiving your official orders. Next, contact the base Transportation Office to discuss your move options. Most personnel choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment—where movers pack and transport your belongings—or a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also called a DITY move, where you handle the move and may receive reimbursement. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule, track, and manage your shipment. This system is required for all military moves and helps you stay updated throughout the process. You are eligible for key entitlements, like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to offset hotel costs during your move, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to help with miscellaneous costs. Plan early, as Carlisle Barracks has a busy summer PCS season and limited on-post lodging. Contact the Transportation Office as soon as you have orders to secure your preferred move dates.
