Creech Air Force Base began as Indian Springs Air Force Auxiliary Field in 1942, supporting the Army Air Forces' training during World War II. Its remote Nevada location made it ideal for gunnery and bombing practice, aiding the nearby Las Vegas Army Airfield (now Nellis AFB).

The base played a vital role in preparing aircrews for combat, especially in the Pacific Theater. Its contributions helped shape the effectiveness of U.S. air operations during the war.

During the Cold War, the base expanded its mission to include drone operations, target towing, and support for nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. Its infrastructure grew to accommodate new technologies and units.

These changes reflected the base’s evolving importance in national defense. The facility adapted to meet the demands of a rapidly changing military landscape.

In the late 20th century, the base became a hub for remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) operations. In 2005, it was renamed Creech Air Force Base to honor General Wilbur L. Creech.

The 432nd Wing and 432nd Air Expeditionary Wing, both central to the Air Force’s drone operations, established their headquarters here. These units have supported missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and global counterterrorism efforts.

Today, Creech AFB is the epicenter of U.S. Air Force RPA operations. It houses MQ-9 Reaper and MQ-1 Predator squadrons, providing intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and precision strike capabilities worldwide.

The base’s mission has transformed it into a cornerstone of modern airpower and a key employer in southern Nevada. Its ongoing evolution ensures its relevance in future defense strategies.

General Creech championed decentralized command and empowered airmen, shaping modern Air Force doctrine. His legacy of innovation and leadership excellence made him a fitting namesake for the base that leads in remotely piloted aircraft operations.

Planning your move to Creech AFB starts with receiving official orders. Once you have orders, quickly contact the Base Transportation Office to discuss your shipment options and get guidance on next steps. Most service members use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to manage their move, so set up your DPS account early at move.mil. You can choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where the government arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), which lets you move your items yourself and possibly earn reimbursement. Each method has specific rules and paperwork, so review your entitlements and deadlines closely. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) helps cover short-term lodging while you secure permanent housing near Creech AFB, and the Dislocation Allowance (DLA) offsets relocation costs. Be sure to keep receipts and track expenses to maximize your benefits. Creech AFB is located in a remote desert area north of Las Vegas, so plan ahead for limited local services and longer commutes. Ask your sponsor for tips about living off-base and navigating the area. Visit the Creech AFB newcomer’s guide for info on local communities, schools, and amenities.

Housing Options

Most Creech AFB personnel live off base, as there is no dedicated on-base housing at Creech. Instead, families and single service members often commute from Indian Springs, Las Vegas, or nearby communities. Housing options include single-family homes, apartments, and townhouses in local neighborhoods or in privatized military housing closer to Nellis AFB. The Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for Creech is tied to the Nellis AFB/Las Vegas rate. For example, an E-5 with dependents receives approximately $2,100/month in 2025. You can estimate your specific BAH using our BAH Calculator. The cost of living in Las Vegas can be high, especially for newer or larger homes. Many families face waitlists for privatized military housing near Nellis, so it's common to rent in the civilian market. Plan for a commute; Indian Springs is a small town with limited housing, while Las Vegas offers more choice but a longer drive.
