Ellsworth Air Force Base began as Rapid City Army Air Base in 1942, built to train B-17 Flying Fortress crews during World War II. Its original mission focused on heavy bomber training, supporting the U.S. Army Air Forces’ strategic bombing campaigns.
The base’s location in western South Dakota offered ample space for training and minimal risk to civilian areas. This made it ideal for large-scale military exercises during wartime.
After WWII, the base shifted to B-29 Superfortress training and later became a key site for the Strategic Air Command (SAC) during the Cold War. In 1947, the base was renamed Rapid City Air Force Base as the Air Force became a separate service.
The installation underwent major expansion in the 1950s, adding new runways and facilities to support B-36 Peacemaker and B-52 Stratofortress bombers. In 1953, the base was renamed Ellsworth Air Force Base in honor of Brigadier General Richard E. Ellsworth, who died in a plane crash that year.
Throughout the Cold War, Ellsworth played a central role in nuclear deterrence. The base hosted Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and remained a hub for B-52 and later B-1B Lancer bombers.
Its units, including the 28th Bomb Wing, participated in key operations and maintained high readiness during crises. Ellsworth’s strategic importance grew as global tensions increased.
Today, Ellsworth AFB is home to the 28th Bomb Wing, operating B-1B Lancers for global strike missions. The base supports national defense and provides significant local economic impact.
Ellsworth is slated to host the new B-21 Raider stealth bomber, ensuring its continued relevance in U.S. strategic operations. This new mission will further strengthen the base’s role in national security.
Namesake
General Ellsworth died in a B-36 Peacemaker crash off the coast of Newfoundland on 18 March 1953. His legacy of service and sacrifice led to the renaming of the base in his honor later that year.
