Base History & Name

Staff Sgt. Anthony Stancil, Senior Master Sgt. Ronald Bartsch and Staff Sgt. Alejandra Chavez participate in a Mogadishu Mile ruck march Oct. 9, 2020 on the Parade Field on F. E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo. The ruck march was organized as a memorial to the servicemembers who fought at the Battle...

F. E. Warren Air Force Base began as Fort D. A. Russell in 1867, established by the U.S. Army to protect workers building the Union Pacific Railroad. Its original mission focused on safeguarding transportation routes and supporting westward expansion.

The fort quickly became a key military post in the region. Cavalry and infantry units were stationed there through the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

During World War II, the installation shifted to training and support roles. It hosted the Army Air Forces Technical School, preparing personnel for wartime service.

In 1949, the base was transferred to the U.S. Air Force and renamed F. E. Warren Air Force Base. The new name honored Francis E. Warren, a Medal of Honor recipient and former U.S. Senator from Wyoming.

The Cold War era transformed F. E. Warren AFB into a strategic missile base. In 1958, it became the first operational Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) base.

The base initially deployed the Atlas missile and later added the Minuteman and Peacekeeper systems. The 90th Missile Wing, activated in 1963, has maintained the base's nuclear deterrence mission ever since.

Today, F. E. Warren AFB remains a cornerstone of U.S. nuclear defense. It oversees hundreds of Minuteman III ICBMs and plays a vital role in global strategic stability.

The base also supports the local Cheyenne community by providing jobs and contributing to regional security.

Namesake

Warren's leadership and dedication to public service made him a prominent figure in Wyoming's history. Naming the base after him honors his military valor and lasting contributions to the state and nation.
