Military Base History

Fort Detrick began as a small municipal airport in Frederick, Maryland, in the 1930s. The U.S. Army acquired the site in 1943, transforming it into a center for biological warfare research during World War II. Its original mission focused on developing defensive and offensive biological capabilities, shaping its early identity and secrecy.

The installation rapidly expanded during the Cold War, becoming the headquarters for the U.S. Army Biological Warfare Laboratories. Fort Detrick drew top scientists and military personnel, playing a central role in the nation’s biological defense and research programs. This influence grew during periods of heightened global tension.

In 1969, President Nixon ended the U.S. offensive biological weapons program, prompting Fort Detrick to shift its focus to biomedical research, public health, and disease prevention. The U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) became a cornerstone, leading efforts in biodefense and emerging infectious diseases.

Today, Fort Detrick is a hub for medical research and national security. It hosts multiple agencies, including the National Cancer Institute and the Department of Homeland Security. The installation supports military, federal, and local missions, making it a vital part of Maryland’s economy and the nation’s health infrastructure.

No significant official name changes have occurred since its designation as Fort Detrick in 1956.
