Fort Drum began as Pine Camp in 1908, established as a training site for the New York National Guard. Its northern New York location offered ample space for large-scale maneuvers and artillery practice.
Over the decades, the installation grew in size and importance, reflecting the evolving needs of the U.S. Army. Expansion allowed for more complex training and increased capacity.
During World War II, Pine Camp underwent massive expansion to support troop mobilization. The Army acquired more land, built new facilities, and stationed thousands of soldiers at the site.
The camp hosted several divisions, including the 4th and 5th Armored Divisions. It served as a key training ground for units preparing for overseas deployment.
In 1951, Pine Camp was renamed Camp Drum to honor Lieutenant General Hugh A. Drum, a distinguished leader in both World Wars. The installation’s role shifted during the Cold War, supporting reserve and National Guard training.
In 1974, the site became Fort Drum, reflecting its permanent status as a major Army post. This change marked a new era of growth and strategic importance.
Today, Fort Drum is home to the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), one of the Army’s most deployed units since the Cold War. The installation supports rapid deployment and training for joint and combined operations.
Fort Drum remains a vital economic and social anchor in the North Country region. It provides jobs, community support, and maintains readiness for global missions.

PCS & Relocation Essentials
Because peak permanent change of station moving season is upon us, it is advisable if you already have your PCS orders to schedule you household packing and shipment with transportation and personal property, said Connie Silk, Army Community Service. Currently on Fort Campbell there could be a four- to six-week delay to get an appointment. (U.S. Army)
Begin your PCS to Fort Drum by reviewing your official orders and promptly contacting the Transportation Office. Decide if you’ll use a government-arranged Household Goods (HHG) shipment or manage a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY). Each method has different processes and reimbursement options, so compare them before scheduling your move. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to set up and track your shipment. This system is required for all official moves and keeps your move details in one place. You may be eligible for Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) for up to 10 days to offset hotel costs while house-hunting or waiting for quarters. Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps cover miscellaneous relocation expenses. Check your entitlements before you travel to avoid surprises. Fort Drum’s northern New York location means weather can affect timing, so plan ahead, especially during winter months.
