Fort Hood began as a World War II training center in 1942, established to meet the U.S. Army’s need for a vast area to test and train with tank destroyers. The base’s location in central Texas offered ample space and favorable weather for year-round training.
Construction rapidly expanded to accommodate tens of thousands of troops and support personnel. By the end of the war, Fort Hood was one of the largest military installations in the country.
During the Cold War, Fort Hood evolved into a key armored and mechanized infantry training site. Major units such as the 1st Cavalry Division and the 4th Infantry Division were based there, playing significant roles in U.S. military operations worldwide.
Fort Hood’s facilities grew to support new technologies and doctrines. This growth reflected the Army’s shift toward modern, mobile warfare and ensured the base remained relevant as military needs changed.
Fort Hood served as a deployment hub for units participating in the Vietnam War, Operation Desert Storm, and the Global War on Terror. Its units have deployed repeatedly to Iraq and Afghanistan, cementing the base’s reputation as a center for combat readiness.
The installation has also supported humanitarian missions and disaster relief, demonstrating its versatility beyond combat operations.
In May 2023, Fort Hood was officially renamed Fort Cavazos as part of the Department of Defense’s initiative to remove Confederate names from military installations. The base remains a vital Army post, supporting active-duty soldiers, training missions, and the local economy.
Its legacy continues as a cornerstone of U.S. armored and combined arms operations, shaping the future of military readiness.
Namesake
General Hood’s legacy is controversial due to his association with the Confederacy. In 2023, the base was renamed Fort Cavazos to honor General Richard E. Cavazos, the first Hispanic four-star general in the U.S. Army, reflecting a shift toward more inclusive representation in military honors.

PCS & Relocation Essentials
Before packing personal property for a permanent change of station move overseas, there are three critical steps Soldiers must complete to successfully make a smooth OCONUS transition, said Connie Silk, supervisor of the Relocation Readiness Program, Army Community Service. For more information, call 270-798-6313 or 270-798-0513.
Arriving at Fort Hood starts with receiving your official PCS orders. Once you have orders, contact the Fort Hood Transportation Office to begin planning your move. You will need to choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment where the military arranges movers, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY), where you handle the move yourself for possible reimbursement. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to schedule and track your shipment. This online portal is required for all moves and keeps you updated on your shipment status.
You are entitled to several PCS benefits. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) helps cover temporary housing costs while you look for permanent housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) helps offset moving expenses. Be sure to check your weight allowances and keep all receipts for reimbursement. Fort Hood’s large size and busy in-processing center mean it’s smart to schedule your move and lodging early, especially during summer peak season. Driving Tips
Fort Hood is a large installation with several gates; main access points can become congested during typical rush hours (6:30–8:30 AM and 3:30–5:30 PM). Expect delays at the main gates, especially the Clear Creek and Warrior Way gates. Inside the base, observe posted speed limits (generally 25 mph in housing and 30 mph elsewhere) and be mindful of pedestrian crossings and school zones. Texas law prohibits handheld cell phone use in school zones and requires seat belt use for all occupants. Parking is generally available near most work areas and facilities, but can be limited near popular locations during peak hours—arrive early for best spots.
Shuttle Information
Fort Hood operates an on-post shuttle system connecting major areas such as barracks, work centers, and medical facilities. Shuttles run on set routes with stops at key locations, typically every 30–60 minutes during duty hours. There is no cost for service members. Schedules and route maps are available on the Fort Hood website and at main shuttle stops.

Housing Pet Policy
Fort Hood on-base housing is managed by Fort Cavazos Family Housing (previously known as Fort Hood Family Housing). Residents may keep up to two pets (dogs and/or cats) per household. There may also be a weight limit per pet, often set at 50-100 lbs, but residents should check with the housing office for current limits. All pets must be registered with the Fort Cavazos Veterinary Center within 5 days of arrival, and proof of current rabies and other vaccinations is required. A non-refundable pet fee or deposit may apply, which varies based on housing type—typically around $200-$300 per pet.
