Fort Leavenworth was established in 1827, making it the oldest active Army post west of the Mississippi River. Its original mission was to protect the expanding western frontier and support the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails. Early construction focused on basic fortifications and support facilities for cavalry and infantry units.
Throughout the 19th century, the fort expanded to include new barracks, training grounds, and administrative buildings. It became a key base for westward expansion, serving as a supply depot and headquarters for military operations during the Indian Wars.
The U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, the military’s only maximum-security prison, was established here in 1875. This facility played a crucial role in military justice and discipline.
During the 20th century, Fort Leavenworth shifted to a focus on military education and doctrine. The Command and General Staff College, founded in 1881, became a premier institution for training Army officers.
The fort played a support role during both World Wars, training officers and serving as a hub for military planning. It also hosted the Army Corrections Command and other specialized units.
Today, Fort Leavenworth is known as the "Intellectual Center of the Army." It houses the Combined Arms Center, Army University, and several think tanks.
The post remains vital for leader development, doctrine creation, and military innovation. There have been no significant official name changes since its establishment; it has always been known as Fort Leavenworth.
