Fort Lee was established in 1917 as a training center for U.S. Army soldiers during World War I. The original mission focused on preparing troops for deployment to the European front, with rapid construction of barracks, training grounds, and support facilities.
The installation was named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee, reflecting the era’s naming conventions for Southern military posts. These historical roots shaped the base’s early identity and influenced its role in Army history.
During World War II, Fort Lee underwent massive expansion to support the war effort. The base became a hub for Quartermaster training, logistics, and supply operations, hosting thousands of soldiers and civilian workers.
Key units included the Quartermaster School and the Women’s Army Corps Training Center. Both organizations were vital to the Army’s logistical capabilities and contributed significantly to the success of military operations.
Throughout the Cold War and into the 21st century, Fort Lee evolved as the Army’s premier logistics and sustainment center. The installation housed the Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM), the U.S. Army Quartermaster Museum, and the Army Logistics University.
These institutions shaped Army doctrine and trained generations of logisticians. Fort Lee’s influence extended across the Army, ensuring that soldiers received the best logistics and sustainment training available.
In April 2023, Fort Lee was officially renamed Fort Gregg-Adams as part of a Department of Defense initiative to remove Confederate names from military installations. This change marked a new chapter in the base’s history.
Today, the base continues its mission as a center for logistics, sustainment, and support training. Fort Gregg-Adams plays a crucial role in Army readiness and contributes to the local Virginia economy.
Namesake
After the Civil War, Lee became president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia. His legacy remains controversial due to his role in the Confederacy and the ongoing national debate over the commemoration of Confederate figures.
