Fort Polk PCS Guide
Base History & Name
Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital was nationally recognized as a Top Hospital by The Leapfrog Group during their annual meeting and awards dinner in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 6. Over 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award. Among those, BJACH received a Top Rural distinction....
Fort Polk began in 1941 as a training center for troops heading to World War II. The Army chose the pine forests of western Louisiana for their remote terrain, which was ideal for large-scale maneuvers. The base hosted the Louisiana Maneuvers, preparing over half a million soldiers for combat overseas.
During the Cold War, Fort Polk expanded to meet the Army's growing needs. In the 1960s, it became a key training site for infantry units deploying to Vietnam. The base's "Tigerland" area gained fame for its realistic jungle warfare training, shaping thousands of soldiers for Southeast Asia.
After Vietnam, Fort Polk adapted to new missions and changing Army priorities. It hosted the 5th Infantry Division and later became home to the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) in 1993. The JRTC introduced advanced, realistic training for units preparing for global deployments, including peacekeeping and counterinsurgency.
In 2023, Fort Polk was officially renamed Fort Johnson to honor Sgt. William Henry Johnson, a World War I hero. Today, the installation remains a vital Army training hub, supporting both active duty and reserve forces. It also plays a major economic and social role in the Leesville and Vernon Parish communities.
Namesake
For his actions, Johnson received the Medal of Honor posthumously in 2015. His legacy highlights the heroism and sacrifice of African American soldiers in U.S. military history. Naming the installation after him honors his courage and service.
