Base History & Name

Bayne-Jones Army Community Hospital was nationally recognized as a Top Hospital by The Leapfrog Group during their annual meeting and awards dinner in Washington, D.C. on Dec. 6. Over 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award. Among those, BJACH received a Top Rural distinction....

Fort Polk began in 1941 as a training center for troops heading to World War II. The Army chose the pine forests of western Louisiana for their remote terrain, which was ideal for large-scale maneuvers. The base hosted the Louisiana Maneuvers, preparing over half a million soldiers for combat overseas.

During the Cold War, Fort Polk expanded to meet the Army's growing needs. In the 1960s, it became a key training site for infantry units deploying to Vietnam. The base's "Tigerland" area gained fame for its realistic jungle warfare training, shaping thousands of soldiers for Southeast Asia.

After Vietnam, Fort Polk adapted to new missions and changing Army priorities. It hosted the 5th Infantry Division and later became home to the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) in 1993. The JRTC introduced advanced, realistic training for units preparing for global deployments, including peacekeeping and counterinsurgency.

In 2023, Fort Polk was officially renamed Fort Johnson to honor Sgt. William Henry Johnson, a World War I hero. Today, the installation remains a vital Army training hub, supporting both active duty and reserve forces. It also plays a major economic and social role in the Leesville and Vernon Parish communities.

Namesake

Sgt. William Henry Johnson was a member of the famed Harlem Hellfighters, an African American regiment in World War I. On May 15, 1918, near the Argonne Forest in France, Johnson fought off a German raiding party, saving his fellow soldier and displaying extraordinary bravery.

For his actions, Johnson received the Medal of Honor posthumously in 2015. His legacy highlights the heroism and sacrifice of African American soldiers in U.S. military history. Naming the installation after him honors his courage and service.

PCS & Relocation Essentials

Before packing personal property for a permanent change of station move overseas, there are three critical steps Soldiers must complete to successfully make a smooth OCONUS transition, said Connie Silk, supervisor of the Relocation Readiness Program, Army Community Service. For more information, call 270-798-6313 or 270-798-0513.

Start your PCS to Fort Polk by reviewing your official orders and contacting the Transportation Office as soon as possible. Early action helps you schedule your move dates and secure housing. You can choose between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment, where movers handle packing and transport, or a Personally Procured Move (PPM, also called DITY), where you handle the move and may receive reimbursement. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) help offset temporary housing and relocation costs. TLE covers short-term lodging while you secure permanent housing, and DLA provides a one-time payment to help with moving expenses. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) to manage your move online. DPS lets you schedule, track, and manage your shipment, and it’s required for all military moves. Fort Polk’s location in central Louisiana means you should plan for potential weather delays and coordinate with local housing early.
