Fort Wainwright began as Ladd Field in 1939 near Fairbanks, Alaska, serving as a cold-weather testing site for military aircraft. The Army Air Corps built the installation to evaluate equipment and personnel in extreme Arctic conditions, a mission that shaped its early years.
During World War II, the airfield played a critical role in the Lend-Lease program, acting as a transfer point for aircraft sent to the Soviet Union. This strategic function highlighted the base’s importance in international military cooperation.
Postwar expansion transformed the base from an airfield to a broader Army post. In 1961, the site was officially renamed Fort Wainwright to honor General Jonathan M. Wainwright.
The base’s mission shifted to supporting ground forces, and it became home to several key units, including the 171st Infantry Brigade and later the 6th Infantry Division (Light). These changes reflected the Army’s evolving operational needs.
During the Cold War, Fort Wainwright served as a strategic hub for Arctic warfare training and rapid deployment forces. Its location allowed the U.S. Army to project power in the North Pacific and support national defense strategies focused on the Soviet threat.
The base also hosted a range of aviation and support units, adapting to new missions over time. This flexibility ensured Fort Wainwright remained a key military asset throughout the Cold War era.
Today, Fort Wainwright is a vital part of U.S. Army Alaska, hosting the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. The installation supports joint training, rapid deployment, and community engagement in Alaska’s Interior.
Its legacy as a cold-weather operations center continues, making Fort Wainwright essential for Arctic readiness and national security. The base’s ongoing mission underscores its lasting importance to the U.S. military.

Start your PCS to Fort Wainwright by reviewing your official orders and contacting your local Transportation Office. You’ll need to decide between a Household Goods (HHG) shipment and a Personally Procured Move (PPM/DITY). Using the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) is required for scheduling and tracking your move. Your entitlements include Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) to offset hotel costs while you secure housing, and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to help cover moving expenses. Fort Wainwright’s remote Alaska location means planning ahead is crucial. Check local weather and shipping timelines, as moves may take longer due to distance and climate.
