Goodfellow Air Force Base began operations in 1940 as a training center for pilots. The base was established to meet the growing need for aircrew during World War II. Its original mission provided advanced flight training for Army Air Corps pilots, supplying the war effort with skilled aviators.
After World War II, Goodfellow shifted its focus from pilot training to intelligence and cryptologic education. The base ended its flying mission in 1958 and began training Air Force personnel in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) skills. This transition established Goodfellow as a key center for technical training.
During the Cold War and beyond, Goodfellow expanded its training to include joint-service instruction for Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and allied personnel. The base became a hub for fire protection and special instruments training, adapting to the changing needs of U.S. defense.
Today, Goodfellow AFB serves as a major training installation for the Department of Defense. It offers specialized education in intelligence, fire protection, and related fields. The base supports the San Angelo community and remains vital to national security, retaining its original name in honor of its namesake.

PCS & Relocation Essentials
A moving contractor loads a moving truck with a service member's household goods during the permanent change of station peak-season at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. March 7, 2018. Planning an ahead will make for a more successful relocation experience.
Arriving at Goodfellow AFB begins with receiving your official orders. As soon as you have them, contact your losing base’s Transportation Office to start your move. You’ll use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to set up your shipment and track your Household Goods (HHG) or opt for a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also called a DITY move. Both options have pros and cons—PPM gives you more control, while HHG is handled by professionals. Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) helps cover lodging and meals while you search for housing, and you may also qualify for a Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to offset relocation costs. Goodfellow AFB processes many student and training moves, so expect some wait times during peak season. Check your entitlements and complete all steps in DPS early to avoid delays.
