Grand Forks Air Force Base was established in the late 1950s as part of the United States' Cold War strategy. Its original mission focused on air defense and strategic deterrence, supporting both bomber and missile operations.
The base was constructed to house Strategic Air Command (SAC) units, reflecting the era's emphasis on nuclear readiness. This focus shaped the base’s infrastructure and long-term role in national security.
Construction began in 1956, and the base became operational in 1957. Over the next decade, Grand Forks AFB expanded to accommodate B-52 bombers and KC-135 Stratotankers.
In the 1970s, the base added Minuteman II intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) silos, further cementing its role in the nation's nuclear triad. These additions increased the base’s strategic importance.
During the Cold War, Grand Forks AFB played a critical role in strategic deterrence. The 319th Bomb Wing and 321st Missile Wing were among the most significant units stationed here.
The base's missile field covered a vast area of North Dakota, making it a key component of U.S. nuclear strategy. Its location and resources contributed to national defense throughout the Cold War.
After the Cold War, the base underwent significant changes. The 321st Missile Wing was inactivated in 1998, and the last missile silo was closed in 2001.
The base shifted focus to air refueling and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) operations. Today, Grand Forks AFB is home to the 319th Reconnaissance Wing, which operates RQ-4 Global Hawk drones for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.
The base remains a vital part of the local economy and supports national defense priorities. Its evolving mission ensures continued relevance in the Air Force structure.
Grand Forks AFB has retained its original name since establishment. There have been no significant official name changes since it opened in 1957.

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) to Grand Forks AFB starts with receiving official orders. Once you have orders, contact the base Transportation Office to begin planning your move. Use the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) at move.mil to arrange your Household Goods (HHG) shipment or to set up a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also called a DITY move. Both options have specific steps and documentation requirements, so review the guidance on the DPS site carefully. Entitlements like Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) and Dislocation Allowance (DLA) help offset costs during your relocation. TLE covers some lodging expenses while you search for housing, and DLA assists with miscellaneous moving costs. Know your authorized allowances and keep all receipts. Grand Forks AFB has a tight-knit community and can experience harsh winters, so plan your arrival for best weather and check the base’s newcomer resources for local tips. Contact your sponsor early for advice on housing, schools, and area amenities.
