Hill Air Force Base was established in 1940 as part of a rapid U.S. military buildup before World War II. Its original mission focused on aircraft maintenance, supply, and logistics to support the expanding Army Air Corps.
The base quickly became a vital hub for depot-level maintenance and repair, especially for bombers and fighters during the war. Hill AFB’s early years set the foundation for its long-term importance to the U.S. Air Force.
Major expansions occurred during World War II, with new hangars, warehouses, and runways constructed to handle increased workloads. The base supported operations in both the European and Pacific theaters, playing a key role in keeping U.S. aircraft mission-ready.
After the war, Hill AFB transitioned to peacetime operations but remained a central logistics and maintenance site. Its facilities continued to evolve to meet changing military needs.
During the Cold War, Hill AFB adapted to support new generations of aircraft, including the B-52 Stratofortress and later, the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The Ogden Air Logistics Complex, based at Hill, became one of the Air Force's largest logistics centers, supporting aircraft, missiles, and electronics.
The base also hosted several operational wings, including the 388th and 419th Fighter Wings. These units contributed to the base’s reputation as a leader in Air Force readiness and innovation.
Today, Hill AFB is a cornerstone of the Air Force Sustainment Center, supporting F-35 Lightning II maintenance and logistics. It remains Utah's largest single-site employer and plays a key role in the local economy.
The base has retained its original name since its dedication in 1940, honoring Major Ployer Peter Hill. This legacy continues to shape its mission and community presence.
Namesake
Major Hill tragically died in 1935 while test flying the Boeing Model 299, the prototype for the B-17 Flying Fortress. His contributions to aviation safety and innovation were recognized by naming the base in his honor, cementing his legacy in Air Force history.
